Arent thoe Boecop is a society aiming to enlarge knowledge of the history of the municipality of Elburg. This includes the villages Doornspijk, Hoge Enk, ‘t Harde, Oostendorp and Elburg. The society is named after steward Arent thoe Boecop, who was ordered to relocate and wall Elburg at the end of the 14th century by Willem van Gulik, duke of Gelre and count of Zutphen. Arent thoe Boecop is a society aiming to enlarge knowledge of the history of the municipality of Elburg. This includes the villages Doornspijk, Hoge Enk, ‘t Harde, Oostendorp and Elburg. The society is named after steward Arent thoe Boecop, who was ordered to relocate and wall Elburg at the end of the 14th century by Willem van Gulik, duke of Gelre and count of Zutphen. The unique, rectangular street plan of the town, which has remained unchanged over the last six centuries, was designed by this steward.

In the course of years the society organized a large number of activities. For example: The excavation of the St. Ludgerus church in Doornspijk; restauration and maintenance of the former fish auction at the harbour; development and upkeep of a herb garden in the Ellestraat; placing of new doors in the Vischpoort; developing and carrying out a historical re-greening project in the outskirts. Besides that the society has published over ninety magazines and a number of books. The members regularly receive a chronicle in which all the activities of the society are announced. Members also receive the free publications published by the Arent Thoe Boecop society.

The society frequently organizes lectures about different themes. Films and slides are used to enliven the lectures. There is also the possibility to participate in the town walk which takes place at least once a year or the annual cycling tour which is arranged together with the Landscaping elements Foundation. Many of the members are active in one of the teams of the society: the publishing team, herb garden team, fishery team or residents’ history team. The seat of the society is in het Gruithuis.
